1Kryzys Kościoła katolickiegoThe crisis of the Catholic Church
Kościół katolicki jest w kryzysie. Papieże powierzają ważne stanowiska swoim krewnym (nepotyzm); księża płacą za urzędy (symonia) i żyją z kobietami (nikolaityzm). Wierni chcą wrócić do przestrzegania nauki Ewangelii i rozpowszechnia się idea reformy Kościoła.The Catholic Church is in crisis. Popes give important positions to their relatives (nepotism); priests pay to get offices (simony) and live with women (Nicolaism). 2Marcin LuterMartin Luther
W Niemczech w 1517 roku mnich Marcin Luter pisze dokument przeciwko Kościołowi, zawierający 95 tez, czyli tematów do dyskusji. W tezach Luter piętnuje zepsucie duchowieństwa. Tezy Lutra zostają wydrukowane i krążą po całych Niemczech. Wielu wiernych popiera Lutra. Papież prosi cesarza o potępienie Lutra, ale pewien książę niemiecki każe Lutra uprowadzić i ukryć w zamku. In Germany, in 1517, the monk Martin Luther writes a document against the Church, containing 95 theses, that is, topics for discussion. In the theses Luther denounces the corruption of the clergy. Luther’s theses are printed and circulate all over Germany. Many believers support Luther. The pope asks the emperor to condemn Luther, but a German prince has Luther kidnapped and hidden in a castle.

3ReformacjaThe Reformation
For Luther the most important thing is salvation, that is, happiness after death. Luther is convinced that God saves a person only if he has faith, and what he does (pilgrimages, donations, charity...) is of no use. According to Luther, one must read the Word of God, that is, the Bible, directly. For this reason he translates the Bible from Latin into German. Luther’s movement is called the Reformation. The Reformation wants to: abolish dogmas (that is, “indisputable truths”); among the sacraments, recognise only baptism and the Eucharist; abolish the clergy: every person is his own priest; make churches poor and bare.

Luter jednak popiera książąt i mówi władzom, by zabijały buntowników. W 1525 roku armie książąt atakują zbuntowanych chłopów i pokonują ich.In Germany the peasants are exploited by the feudal lords and think that Luther can be their saviour. So in 1524 the peasants rebel against the German princes. Luther, however, supports the princes and tells the authorities to kill the rebels. In 1525 the princes’ armies attack the rebel peasants and defeat them.

5Karol V i wojna z protestantamiCharles V and the war against the Protestants
The Catholic emperor Charles V forbids the spread of the Reformation in Germany, but the German princes protest: for this reason they are called “Protestants”. So Charles V wages war against the princes who support the Reformation. The war ends with the victory of the Protestants. In this way a principle is established: the religion of the subjects must be the same as the religion of their ruler. In Switzerland John Calvin founds a Protestant community with strict rules.

1Reformacja wstrząsa Kościołem katolickimThe Reformation shakes the Catholic Church
The Church reacts to the spread of the Protestant Reformation and carries out a Counter-Reformation, in order to reaffirm the principles of its own doctrine and to change its own internal organisation. The Church calls a council, that is, a meeting of all the bishops and cardinals, both Catholic and Protestant, to discuss Christian doctrine. In 1545 the Council of Trent begins: it lasts 18 years, but does not lead to reconciliation between Protestants and Catholics.

2Treści kontrreformacjiThe contents of the Counter-Reformation
Sobór trydencki potwierdza zasady doktryny katolickiej odrzucane przez protestantów: kult świętych, znaczenie świętych obrazów, siedem sakramentów, dogmaty, prymat papieża oraz rolę kapłana jako pośrednika między wiernymi a Bogiem. Dzięki soborowi trydenckiemu: kapłanom jezuitom powierza się zadanie szerzenia wiary katolickiej; biskupom powierza się zadanie kontrolowania zachowania kapłanów; mnichom zaleca się, aby swoim ubóstwem dawali dobry przykład.The Council of Trent confirms the principles of Catholic doctrine rejected by the Protestants: the cult of saints, the importance of sacred images, the seven sacraments, the dogmas, the supremacy of the pope and the role of the priest as a mediator between the faithful and God. Thanks to the Council of Trent: the Jesuit priests are given the task of spreading the Catholic faith; the bishops are given the task of controlling the behaviour of priests; monks are urged to set a good example with their poverty.

3Różnice między Północą a Południem EuropyDifferences between Northern and Southern Europe
Northern Europe is mostly Protestant, and Southern Europe is mostly Catholic. The difference can be seen in the churches: Protestant churches have no images and are very simple, while Catholic churches are full of paintings and very rich.

4Nietolerancja i fanatyzm katolików i protestantówIntolerance and fanaticism of Catholics and Protestants
Fanatycy i nietolerancyjni robią wszystko, by znaleźć czarownice i czarowników, kobiety i mężczyzn uznawanych za heretyków. To poszukiwanie nazywa się „polowaniem na czarownice”.In many countries a period of fanaticism and intolerance begins towards those who belong to a religion different from that of the majority. Catholics and Protestants accuse of heresy the people who criticise some aspect of religion, and burn them at the stake. Fanatics and intolerant people do everything to find witches and wizards, women and men considered heretics. This search is called the “witch hunt”.

5Europejczycy cierpią z powodu dżumy, głodu i wojen religijnychEuropeans suffer from plague, famine and wars of religion
Ludność Europy cierpi z powodu dżumy, klęsk głodu i wojen religijnych. Hugenoci to protestanci, wyznawcy Kalwina. Edykt nantejski daje hugenotom wolność wyznania i równość praw. The population of Europe suffers because of the plague, famines and wars of religion. In France, in 1559, a war of religion begins between Catholics and Huguenots. The Huguenots are Protestants, followers of Calvin. The war breaks out when the Duke of Guise, a Catholic, attacks Prince Henry of Bourbon, a Huguenot. The war blocks trade and farming and causes hunger and disease. The war ends in 1598 with a compromise: Henry of Bourbon converts to Catholicism and becomes king. The Edict of Nantes gives the Huguenots freedom of worship and equality of rights.
