Plus i minusPlus and minusPiù e meno

Plus, minus, naładowany, neutralny. Te słowa wracają w chemii i fizyce cały czas. Wystarczy kilka minut.Plus, minus, charged, neutral. These words keep coming back in chemistry and physics. Here they are explained from scratch, with things to click. It only takes a few minutes. Bastano pochi minuti.

ŁadunekChargeCarica

Czyli co to jest ładunek (charge)What is an electric charge?

It all depends on one thing: electric charge. It is simpler than it looks.

Trzy zasadyThree rulesTre regole
  • Ładunek to cecha cząstek. Są dwa rodzaje: dodatni (+, positive) i ujemny (−, negative).Charge is a property of particles. There are two kinds: positive (+) and negative (−).La carica è una proprietà delle particelle.
Takie same się odpychają (+ i +, albo − i −).Different charges attract (+ and −). The same charges repel (+ and +, or − and −).Cariche diverse si attraggono (+ e −).
Wychodzi zero. To jest neutralny (neutral).A plus and a minus of the same strength cancel out. You get zero. That is neutral.

Think about money. You have +5 in your wallet and you owe a friend −5. After paying the debt you have 0: not in plus, not in minus. Charges work the same way.

Atom jest neutralny, gdy protonów i elektronów jest tyle samo.In the atom: protons in the nucleus have a + charge. Electrons have a − charge. Neutrons have no charge (zero, they are neutral). An atom is neutral when it has the same number of protons and electrons.

This atom has 3 protons in the nucleus (+3). Add and remove electrons (−1 each) and watch the charge of the whole atom change.

Jeśli usłyszysz o jonach, to właśnie to.An atom almost never loses protons, because they sit deep in the nucleus. The charge of an atom changes when it gives away or takes in electrons. Too many electrons = negative. Too few = positive. A charged atom like that is called an ion. If you hear about ions, this is what it means.
Electricity from a jumper. When you rub a balloon on your hair, electrons move from the hair to the balloon. The balloon gets extra minuses and is negative, the hair loses minuses and is positive. Different charges attract, so the hair follows the balloon. Strands of hair push away from each other because they have the same charge: that is why you get crazy hair.
Piorun to wielka neutralizacja.Lightning is a huge cancelling-out. Piorun to moment, gdy elektrony przeskakują, żeby wyrównać ładunki. Wyszło zero, ale z hukiem. In a storm cloud lots of minuses build up, and on the ground pluses. Lightning is the moment electrons jump across to even things out. The result is zero, but with a bang.
Skąd plus i minus? Why plus and minus? The signs were chosen by Benjamin Franklin, an American scientist, in the 1700s. He was unlucky, though: he guessed the other kind is the one that moves. In reality it is the electrons that move, and they got the minus.
