Około 3 minut czytania: cała historia w jednym ciąguAbout 3 minutes of reading: the whole story in one line
1. Przed feudalizmem: silne państwo1. Before feudalism: a strong state
Dawny Rzym miał armię, drogi, urzędników i podatki, więc jeden władca rządził ogromnym krajem. Zachodnie Cesarstwo upadło w 476 roku. Potem Europą rządzili królowie ludów z północy, np. Frankowie. Ich państwa były mniejsze i słabsze.Ancient Rome had an army, roads, officials and taxes, so one ruler governed a huge country. The Western Empire fell in 476. After that, kings of the northern peoples, such as the Franks, ruled Europe. Their states were smaller and weaker.
2. Karol Wielki (800–814): ostatni silny władca2. Charlemagne (800–814): the last strong ruler
Król Franków Karol podbił pół Europy, a papież koronował go na cesarza. Kraj podzielił na hrabstwa. Hrabiowie rządzili w jego imieniu, a inspektorzy ich sprawdzali. Dopóki Karol żył, to działało.Charles, king of the Franks, conquered half of Europe and the pope crowned him emperor. He split the land into counties. Counts ruled in his name and inspectors checked them. As long as Charles lived, it worked.
3. Rozpad (843): bracia dzielą imperium3. The break-up (843): brothers split the empire
Frankowie mieli zwyczaj, że po królu dziedziczą wszyscy synowie. Po Karolu jego synowie i wnukowie kłócili się o spadek. W 843 roku w Verdun trzej bracia podzielili imperium na trzy części. To zalążek Francji i Niemiec. The Franks had a custom that all sons inherit from a king. After Charles his sons and grandsons quarrelled over the inheritance. In 843 at Verdun three brothers split the empire into three parts. This is the seed of France and Germany.
4. Wróg u bram: trzy najazdy4. The enemy at the gate: three invasions
Słabi królowie nie umieli bronić ludzi. Z trzech stron atakowali Węgrzy (z koni), Wikingowie (z łodzi) i Saraceni (z południa). Na Sycylii najpierw rządzili Arabowie (Palermo to wtedy Balarm), a potem Normanowie.Weak kings could not defend their people. From three sides came the Hungarians (on horses), the Vikings (in boats) and the Saracens (from the south). In Sicily the Arabs ruled first (Palermo was then Balarm), and then the Normans.
5. Feudalizm i zamki: ochrona za wierność5. Feudalism and castles: protection for loyalty
Skoro król nie obroni, ludzie szukają ochrony u silniejszych. Pan daje wasalowi ziemię (lenno) i ochronę. Wasal przysięga wierność i walczy. Panowie budują zamki. Zamek dziedziczy najstarszy syn, a młodsi zostają rycerzami. Chłopi pracują na wszystkich.Since the king cannot defend them, people look for protection from the stronger. A lord gives a vassal land (a fief) and protection. The vassal swears loyalty and fights. Lords build castles. The eldest son inherits the castle, and younger sons become knights. Peasants work for everybody.
6. Kościół: największa siła6. The Church: the biggest power
W tym świecie Kościół był wszędzie: miał ziemię, bogactwa i ludzi, którzy umieli pisać. Biskupi byli też panami. Papież i cesarz kłócili się, kto wybiera biskupów (Canossa, 1077).In this world the Church was everywhere: it had land, riches and people who could write. Bishops were also lords. The pope and the emperor argued about who chooses bishops (Canossa, 1077).
7. Po roku 1000: handel i nowa grupa7. After the year 1000: trade and a new group
Gdy było spokojniej, zostawały nadwyżki plonów. Rosły miasta i porty (Wenecja, Genua, Piza, Amalfi). Kupcy wymyślili weksle i banki. Rodzi się czwarta grupa: ludzie miast. Z tego świata wyrasta to, co masz teraz na lekcji: kryzys Kościoła i Reformacja. When it was calmer, surpluses of harvest were left over. Towns and ports grew (Venice, Genoa, Pisa, Amalfi). Merchants invented bills of exchange and banks. A fourth group is born: townspeople. From this world grows what you have in class now: the crisis of the Church and the Reformation.
